hail to the chief
Last Thursday, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court John Roberts visited Drake. I didn’t get to have breakfast with him or anything, but it was definitely enjoyable to spend an hour in a question and answer session.
I think my favorite quote from the Chief Justice was: “If you’re going to be a judge, might as well be a justice on the Supreme Court. If you’re going to be a justice on the Supreme Court, might as well be the Chief Justice.” It was a candid and humorous moment, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well he did with us crazy law students.
His speech in the afternoon was good too, but it seemed a little safe. His responses in the Q & A session were much better. Overall, it was a good visit, and something I am sure I will remember forever!

Is it just me, or does he look like the Perdue chicken guy on the commercials? How fun to have him speak at your school! (Although the Perdue chicken guy might have a few interesting things to say too.)

I listened to the hearings before he became Cheif Justice. I enjoyed listening to those and i remember thinking the same things; “safe” and “candid.” He never tripped over himself nor did any of his responses sound contrived.
I approve.
They definitely didn’t seem contrived, but it was interesting that a lot of what he talked about at the Q & A session was what he talked about at those hearings. He knows his stuff, that’s for sure!
