a bad idea in so many ways

27 November, 2007

According to this article, white women from age fifty and up are vacationing in Kenya, but not for the beaches or the culture. Oh, no. They think it’s a good idea to find a 20-something native Kenyan who probably speaks spotty English but will give them a good time in bed. They pay for these young men’s meals, allow them to stay in their hotel, and buy things for them like clothing, shoes, and sunglasses.

First of all, it isn’t exactly smart to put yourself in the position of a “John” (or a “Jane” in this case) in a foreign country. You are basically asking to be robbed.

Second…um, HELLO? HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD OF THE AIDS EPIDEMIC IN AFRICA? The article mentions that some women feel that condom use is “too businesslike for their exotic fantasies.” What the hell? I guess they need to buy tshirts that say “I went to Kenya and all I got was HIV”… Moronic.

Third, do we really think it’s a good idea to start a booming industry such as this in an impoverished nation? We’re not teaching these people that a hard day’s work will earn you pay. We’re teaching them that sexual promiscuity is okay, and that you can even get paid for it. Prostitution isn’t legal in first world countries for a reason. Why should it be there? These young people are putting themselves at risk, too. This behavior only increases their chances of contracting HIV and then spreading it.

Overall it just seems like a bad idea in so many ways. I don’t feel this way because it’s older women courting young men. I think that anyone that goes to a foreign country expressly for their interest in the underage sex trade is appalling. Someone needs to stop it, and by “frowning upon it” the Kenyan government isn’t helping the situation.

Ick…I agree…wrong in so many ways. And um, hello…wanna get pregnant while you’re at it?? I know they are “older women” but stranger things have happened! Sheesh. Great post. Very insightful!

Exactly. It’s definitely not impossible, no matter how old they think they are!

    Thanks. 🙂

This is so wrong, to go to another country and exploit their people for your own jollies. But if people are that stupid, they deserve AIDS, it’s called “Natural Selection”.

oh dear! That’s so gross in so many ways. And no offence, but REALLY? You have to fly out of the country to get sum? Are you really THAT bad off to begin with? If so, did you know that prostitution is legal in Nevada? Or at least it is in Las Vegas. You can drink, eat, shop AND get laid! All for under $10.00 on Fremont Street.

    *uh… umm… I mean… uh… that’s what I hear anyways.

I’ve been a sex worker off-and-on for a number of years and have strong feelings about these kinds of power imbalances. Westerners frolicking overseas with poor people on their vacation is especially disturbing. While it occasionally makes a human interest story when white women go to South America or Africa to enjoy the local gigolos, it really is much more common among men (Rush Limbaugh in the Dominican Republic, anyone?). I guess that’s why it doesn’t make the news. But do a search on blogs and you’ll find guys out their bragging about their libertine adventures in Third World paradise. There are women in these countries selling days of their lives to these sexpat bloggers for little more than food money and don’t have the means to keep blogs and write books. Their johns are doing it for them, telling the world how much fun they’re having.

Norma: It really is, and the sad part is that it isn’t only Americans.

“Compartments”: Thank you for your input. No matter who it is going to foreign countries, the practice is appalling. It’s absolutely terrible.
