damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t

8 January, 2008

So everyone is criticizing Hillary Clinton for her tearful moment yesterday in New Hampshire. A member of the audience asked her how she keeps going, and despite reports that she “broke down” or “cried” or “had an emotional outburst,” she had a brief moment where she teared up. There weren’t even any tears that spilled over. No kleenex was needed. Then, she recovered pretty well and went on to talk about how running for president is personal for her, not just political.

My question is, what’s wrong with that?

It’s not often that you see a male political candidate get emotional and tear up. However, they get emotional plenty. You can see the flush rise to their cheeks when an opponent says something they don’t like. You see them pound on the podium with their fists, or walk away from the podium for a moment. Yet no one says a word.

No only that, for months Clinton has been criticized for being machine-like, robotic, or impersonal. Suddenly she briefly shows emotion, and she’s a loose cannon, too emotional, and incapable of running this country. Unbelievable.

I’m not necessarily a fan myself (I caucused for Barack Obama), but Hillary Clinton clearly cares about the future of this country, and when an audience member asked her how she does it, it was like someone suddenly asking her how she was. It wasn’t a question on policy or platform, or on an opponent. It was a personal question. And for her to answer it so personally and passionately says a lot for Senator Clinton in my book.

To suggest that she is somehow weak for showing for a brief moment her human side when asked a personal (not platform-specific) question or that she wouldn’t be a capable president is absurd. I think that people in this country need a reality check. People with passion and the ability to channel it into something they believe in are the people who truly do things in this world. I think Hillary Clinton does just that, and she is more capable of running this country than a lot of men.

*STANDS UP AND APPLAUDS LISS* You truely have a way with words, Liss. I also share a lot of the same ideas and beliefs as you and this time is no different. You’ve hit the truth right on the head.

Thanks, Amber. I’m glad you agree. 🙂
