“There is nothing wrong with doing well while doing good.”

21 August, 2008

I think that my title, which is a quote by Dean Russell Lovell, is my new mantra.

There is nothing wrong with doing well for yourself in the legal profession. No matter what people say about greed, or motivations that are incorrect, there is a reason some lawyers make bank. They are experts at what they do. At the same time, being an expert in any legal field gives you a specific duty to perform public service. It doesn’t even have to be free public service. You should be driven by a desire to do good in your field, no matter if it is nursing or teaching or law or engineering or communications.

I was really inspired by some of the speakers at orientation today. Roxanne Conlin, a very prominent attorney in Des Moines and a Drake Law (and undergrad and masters program) grad, was the second woman in the country to be apppointed as U.S. Attorney and ran for governer of the state of Iowa in the eighties. Recently, she sued Microsoft for violation of antitrust laws. She didn’t back down when they merely offered coupons to consumers (so they could go and spend MORE money on Microsoft products). She held out and earned her clients a class-action settlement of $180 million. And it’s not as though she’s just keeping the money for herself. About $45 million of that is going back to Iowa schools to fix the digital divide. Another million was used to endow a grant to Legal Aid to combat domestic violence.

She is one of many amazing stories to come out of my school. I am coming to realize that being a graduate of Drake Law School means I am joining the ranks of a pretty incredible bunch of people. It is a lot to live up to, and I hope that I do it well – even surpass it. Sometimes it’s just nice to have your ideals about your future validated. And no, I am not receiving compensation for this endorsement. I’m just so thrilled and impressed that I definitely made the right decision.
