because I’m a glutton for punishment, that’s why

8 September, 2008

This week and next week, 110 1Ls will be partaking in the C. Edwin Moore moot court competition. Moot court is a lot like mock trial, except that it’s at the appellate court level. This means that it’s just the attornies arguing for ten minutes each in front of the judges (because hypothetically, there’s already been a trial). We will have to argue one side this week, and the other side next week. Sixteen make it to the semi-finals, and then the top four make it to the finals and argue in front of the real Iowa Appellate Court judges. Holy buckets.

Why are we doing this on top of all of the work we’re already doing for our regular classes? I ask myself this many times a day. There are definitely a few good reasons.

  • First, it’s really good experience. Next semester as part of Legal Research and Writing, we will have to do this for a grade. It might not be quite as nervewracking if we’ve already been through it once.
  • Second, this is like an informal tryout for those of us who are interested in making the school’s mock trial and moot court teams. We don’t get to participate in those things until next year, but they will be watching and keeping us in mind for later.
  • Third, it will be good to get practice with both public speaking and talking about the law. Especially for those of us who want to be trial lawyers, these skills are things we will use every day.
  • Finally, it’s because we’re type-A personalities. We see a challenge and want to take it. We are competitive and want to see how far we can go.

I’m nervous…but I’m extremely excited to get a chance to test out this skill-set. It will be the first time I wear a suit for something, so that’ll be new too. Wish me luck!

It’s the scariest thing I did in my first year but I’m SO glad I did it.

You’re going to do a great job! And best of luck!

So, will you be wearing a moot suit?
(Couldn’t resist the urge to make a dumb joke.)

Knock ’em dead and make us all proud as usual!
    😉

    Two week torture?
When do you get to find out the topic?

Ingenue: I’m sure I’ll agree once all of this is over…

    Aunt Tine: Hahahahaha!

Colsy: I found out on Saturday. It has to do with the use of post-arrest, pre-Miranda silence as substantive proof of guilt. I’m loving it!
