Reggie’s Sleepout 2008

19 November, 2008

Reggie’s Sleepout was a huge success this year! They haven’t figured the final tally of donations, but over 1400 people registered and over 700 people actually slept out. Our team didn’t win any design contest awards, but we had fun building our structures and helping to raise money and awareness of the problem of youth homelessness.

Our team’s (team Equal Justice Works) theme involved breaking down the barriers of homelessness and solutions to help kids get past those barriers. My house was the community health center in our little theme, and it was quite cozy.

Well, it was cozy except for the moment where I was laying down inside to get all of my stuff put away out of the rain and the roof flew off! I felt like Dorothy… They got the roof back on and we did our best to reinforce it. We went into the field house to watch the awards ceremony for the box design contest, and when we came back out, this is what we found:

My house had been demolished by a huge wind gust! I survived the night, but my house did not. By that point, they were shutting off the lights on the field, the duct tape that was on the boxes already stopped sticking, and we were down to very little extra duct tape. So I (along with several other people who were in the same situation) had to leave for the night.

All in all it was a very interesting and amazing experience. I can’t wait until next year! We’ve got big plans for improving our structures, and maybe some ideas for themes.

Here’s the link to the rest of my Reggie’s photoset!

I love it that you had the health center! That was adorable! My question is, did you study during the camp out?

Heh. No, Colsy. That backpack is full of more warm clothes and a blanket. 🙂
