“Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.”

3 April, 2009

The state motto of Iowa, seen in the title of this post, sums up well the sentiment in Varnum, the unanimous decision handed down by the Iowa Supreme Court today overturning the state’s ban on gay marriage.

I’m thankful I live in a state that values civil rights and equal protection for all of its citizens.

This is definitely a plus….however…one downside is even though this has been overturned, the Federal Government still does not recognize same sex marriages as “legal” in terms of benefits. So all Federal employees that are now able to be married and has a spouse that is not a Federal employee…still won’t be able to extend benefits to their new spouses.

Jansen: I’m glad – it should be.

Emily: Definitely a valid and important point. It’s too bad that things work out that way, and hopefully a day will come (soon) where that’s no longer a problem.
